Sport Coach - Tasks and specialisations

Tasks & duties

Sport coaches may do some or all of the following:
  • help athletes learn the skills and rules of a sport
  • advise players on the tactics and psychology of the sport
  • organise and lead practice sessions and competitions
  • develop training programmes and prepare athletes physically for competition
  • identify and encourage talented players
  • select players for teams and events
  • ensure safety of players
  • look after equipment and ensure players use these correctly.

Specialisations

Sport coaches usually specialise in coaching a particular sport, whether it is an individual sport such as tennis, swimming or golf, or team sports such as rugby, cricket, basketball, or netball.
