Tasks & duties

Exterior plasterers may do some or all of the following:
  • look at and interpret plans and specifications made by architects and draughtspeople
  • advise clients on suitable products to use
  • prepare quotes and invoices for customers
  • attach flashing (a metal strip) around windows for waterproofing
  • decide whether to use cement-based, sand-based or modified plaster on a surface
  • erect mobile scaffolding (only if it is under five metres high)
  • clean and prepare surfaces for plastering
  • mix plaster according to manufacturer's specifications
  • apply plaster to surfaces
  • ensure surfaces are watertight
  • create decorative textures in finishing coats
  • fix plaster fittings
  • clean up after the job
  • run their own businesses.
