Train Manager - Tasks and specialisations

Tasks & duties

Train managers may do some or all of the following:

  • collect fares and issue and clip tickets
  • attend to the needs and requests of passengers
  • open and shut doors to let passengers in and out
  • give information on routes, prices and timetables
  • conduct safety checks of the train prior to departure
  • liaise with locomotive engineers and other rail staff
  • supervise passenger safety
  • ensure carriages are clean and safe
  • work in train canteen
  • load and unload luggage.

Specialisations

Some train managers work on urban passenger trains while others work on long distance passenger trains. Train managers on long distance passenger trains alternate between working shifts as a train manager and working shifts in the train's canteen.
