Many jobs in this industry are influenced by the state of the property market.
Census figures show that the number of people in property services jobs rose strongly between 2001 and 2006. This was a period of significant growth in building construction and housing sales. The number of real estate salespeople rose by 30%to 9,438 and the number of property managers rose by 40%to 4,920.
After a long period of growth, activity in the property market has started to decline due to a slowing economy.
Jobs in areas such as real estate sales and mortgage broking are directly affected by the level of activity in the property market as they rely on a high volume of people to be buying and selling property to provide income through commission.
