About this industry

  • While more than 9,000 doctors are employed in New Zealand, the country is facing a severe shortage of doctors in all specialist roles.

Training and progression

  • Doctors need to complete a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, spend at least two years as a junior house surgeon in a hospital, and three to five years’ training as a specialist.
