Systems administrator Peter MacManus says his job is as much about people as it is about working with computers.
"You're dealing with people with a huge range of computer skills. Some people have very little knowledge so you have to be patient when they ask questions You tell them that you can understand how they might find it difficult, and you just try to help them out. You're not there to berate them for asking what for you is a simple question.
"Helping people sort out their problems is what gives me a sense of accomplishment."
Not surprisingly, Peter believes people skills are key for anyone in this role. "I think it's the main thing, especially when you are starting out in the career. You can't hide from people. You're out there on the front line.
"But other skills you really need are problem-solving skills, analytical skills, and the ability to research. And you mustn't be afraid to ask questions of people who are more experienced than you, like your team leader or your colleagues."
Peter adds that teamwork is essential when you have a wide range of tasks to do each day, involving many linked systems.
"On a daily basis I'm responsible for making sure our back-up systems are running, so we have all the data in case of a crash or hardware failure. I also deal with email and database administration, monitor the anti-virus system, and provide technical support for our mobile communications."
For people considering entering the industry, Peter recommends playing around with computers as much as possible.
"Break them, take them apart, and put them back together again. And if you want to get into technical support, you need those people skills, so get some work in the service or hospitality industry, and talk to people from all walks of life because it will make it easier when you're dealing with clients."
