  • knowledge of the way courts work
  • research skills
  • skills in interpreting, analysing and evaluating information
  • planning and organisational skills
  • public speaking skills
  • communication and listening skills
  • negotiating and problem-solving skills.

Personal Qualities

Barristers need to be:
  • persuasive
  • calm and patient
  • good at listening
  • able to think on their feet
  • confident
  • good at working under pressure
  • objective
  • responsible and able to keep information private.
Barristers also need to be able to consider situations from other people's points of view, and must have an understanding of other cultures.
