  • the ability to identify and analyse geological samples and materials
  • research skills
  • skill in analysing and interpreting research results and other information
  • practical skills for performing experiments and operating scientific equipment
  • problem-solving skills
  • planning and organisational skills

Personal Qualities

Geologists need to be:
  • observant
  • practical
  • patient
  • motivated
  • methodical.
They must also have an eye for detail and enjoy working outside.

Karen Higgs.

"You need to be methodical in your work so you don't miss anything."

Karen Higgs - Reservoir Geologist

Physical Requirements

Geologists need to be fit and healthy as they may be required to walk around mine sites or other worksites while carrying out fieldwork. They should have good hand-eye co-ordination, and it is important that geologists working at underground mines are not claustrophobic.

Rob Boyd.

"You need to be reasonably fit because it's about a two-kilometre walk out of the mine and it's on a gradient."

Rob Boyd - Geologist
