Skills & knowledge

Valuers need to have:
  • knowledge of the history and details of the items they are valuing
  • knowledge of the market value of items or how to find out this information
  • knowledge of styles and trends in their area of work
  • skill in evaluating items
  • record-keeping skills
  • maths skills, including the ability to make calculations
  • good research skills
  • communication and interviewing skills
  • time management skills.

Personal Qualities

Valuers need to be:
  • enquiring
  • careful
  • observant and accurate, with an eye for detail
  • mature and polite
  • honest
  • confident
  • empathetic.

Physical Requirements

Valuers need to be reasonably fit and healthy because they can do a lot of walking and spend time on their feet. They should have good eyesight (with or without corrective lenses), good hearing and normal colour vision.
