Skills & knowledge

Electricians need to have:
  • knowledge of electrical theory
  • knowledge of electrical legislation, codes, and standards of practice
  • knowledge of how to install electrical wiring and equipment
  • excellent communication skills
  • the ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and floor plans
  • good problem-solving skills for diagnosing electrical faults
  • basic maths and physics skills
  • record-keeping skills
  • first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills
  • knowledge of safety procedures.

Personal Qualities

Electricians need to be:
  • accurate and methodical
  • practical and logical
  • motivated
  • able to work well independently or in a team
  • safety-conscious when installing and maintaining electrical wiring and equipment.

 

Physical Requirements

Electricians need to have good eyesight (with or without corrective lenses), normal colour vision and good hand-eye co-ordination. 

They may work at heights.
