Automotive Electrician - Personal requirements

Skills & knowledge

Automotive electricians need to have:

knowledge of electrical theory and circuit diagrams

knowledge of automotive electronics

knowledge of vehicle components

knowledge of basic engineering

knowledge of the basic mechanics of vehicles

excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

good communication skills

good reading and writing skills

strong computer skills

the ability to work with small, delicate components.

Personal Qualities

Automotive electricians should be accurate, honest, logical, persistent and adaptable. They should also be patient, careful, safety-conscious, and able to work well under pressure. They also need to be inquisitive and fast learners with an ability to think outside the square.

"You have to be able to listen to and talk with customers; whether you are in the workshop or on the road. You have to ask them heaps of questions to go through a process of elimination to diagnose the fault."

Physical Requirements

Automotive electricians need to have good hand-eye co-ordination and normal colour vision. They also need to be nimble and have good flexibility for working in small spaces.
