Bus Driver - Personal requirements

Skills & knowledge

Bus drivers need to have:
  • excellent driving skills, including defensive-driving techniques
  • knowledge of the Road Code and transport regulations
  • good communication and people skills
  • knowledge of the area they work in, the correct bus routes to take, and the correct fares for each journey
  • basic maths skills to work out fares and change
  • the ability to operate Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technology, and multi-function ticketing systems.

Bus drivers may deal with hundreds of passengers a day, so need good people skills

 

Personal Qualities

Bus drivers need to be:
  • honest and reliable
  • friendly and polite
  • able to relate to people from a range of backgrounds
  • patient, tolerant and able to remain calm under pressure.

 

Physical Requirements

Bus drivers must pass a medical exam every five years, so they need to be reasonably fit and healthy. They must not have any heart conditions, and they need to have good hearing and good eyesight (with or without corrective lenses).

They also need to have a neat and tidy appearance.
