Roofer - Personal requirements

Skills & knowledge

Roofers need to have:
  • knowledge of roof construction and repair
  • knowledge of different roofing materials such as tiles, corrugated iron and butyl rubber (roofing rubber)
  • the ability to read and interpret building plans
  • understanding of the New Zealand Building Code and the New Zealand Roofing Code of Practice
  • knowledge of health and safety
  • basic maths skills for measuring and cutting roofing materials to size
  • organisational skills.
Self-employed roofers and roofers who employ staff must have small business skills.

Personal Qualities

Roofers need to be:
  • safety-conscious
  • comfortable with heights
  • quick and efficient, with an eye for detail
  • able to follow instructions.

 

Physical Requirements

Roofers need to be fit and healthy, and should have a strong back and arms as they may do a lot of lifting. They also need good hand-eye co-ordination and a good sense of balance.
