Skills & knowledge
Roofers need to have:
- knowledge of roof construction and repair
- knowledge of different roofing materials such as tiles, corrugated iron and butyl rubber (roofing rubber)
- the ability to read and interpret building plans
- understanding of the New Zealand Building Code and the New Zealand Roofing Code of Practice
- knowledge of health and safety
- basic maths skills for measuring and cutting roofing materials to size
- organisational skills.
Self-employed roofers and roofers who employ staff must have small business skills.

Personal Qualities
Roofers need to be:
- safety-conscious
- comfortable with heights
- quick and efficient, with an eye for detail
- able to follow instructions.
Physical Requirements
Roofers need to be fit and healthy, and should have a strong back and arms as they may do a lot of lifting. They also need good hand-eye co-ordination and a good sense of balance.
