Skills & knowledge

Picture framers need to have:
  • knowledge of colour and design
  • knowledge of different types of materials and frames
  • knowledge of framing and repairing techniques
  • knowledge of the use and care of equipment
  • art and design skills
  • basic maths skills for doing calculations
  • measuring skills
  • carpentry skills for joining and repairing frames
  • glazing skills for fitting glass into picture frames
  • good communication and customer service skills
  • business management skills if they run their own picture framing business.

Personal Qualities

Picture framers need to be:
  • accurate, careful and practical
  • creative, with an eye for colour and detail
  • able to maintain concentration, especially when using the mechanical saw for cutting framing
  • organised, responsible and able to follow instructions
  • friendly, patient and helpful.

Picture framers need precise hand and finger movement

 

Physical Requirements

Picture framers need to be reasonably fit and healthy, as there is some lifting involved and long periods of standing. They also need to have good hand-eye co-ordination, precise hand and finger movement, and normal colour vision.
