Training and development managers need to have:
  • knowledge of the structure and role of the organisation, and staff responsibilities
  • an understanding of performance management, analysis and improvement
  • knowledge of methods and availability of training, particularly in adult education, and the ability to measure its effectiveness
  • understanding of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) framework
  • up-to-date knowledge of trends in training and development
  • understanding of equal employment issues, Treaty of Waitangi principles and legislation that affects training such as the Privacy Act
  • training, teaching and group work skills
  • skill in interpreting how business strategies translate into an organisation's development and training strategy
  • the ability to identify and analyse training needs
  • leadership skills, including the ability to develop and manage a team
  • planning and organisational skills
  • communication skills
  • negotiating skills
  • budgeting skills.
