Entry Requirements

To become a health and safety officer it is recommended you have a health and safety certificate or diploma at tertiary level.

 

Secondary Education

Sixth Form Certificate, Bursary or NCEA equivalent is recommended to enter tertiary training. Useful subjects include maths, English and science.

Tertiary Education

Massey University and the University of Otago are currently the only universities offering health and safety diplomas. However, a number of polytechnics and industry training organisations in New Zealand also offer health and safety certificates and diplomas.

 

Training on the job

Many health and safety officers learn new skills on the job.

Health and safety officers are encouraged to belong to a professional body, such as the NZ Institute of Safety Management, where they can attend courses and seminars to continue their professional development. The NZ Safety Council also provides opportunities for further training.

 

Useful Experience

Useful experience includes:
  • a background in occupational health nursing
  • work for the ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation)
  • work as a Department of Labour occupational safety and health inspector
  • work in a trade that requires health and safety awareness.
