Entry Requirements

To become a civil engineering technician you need a Diploma in Engineering or an equivalent diploma. 

Some companies offer cadetships which enable people to train on the job and study part-time for a Diploma in Engineering (to become qualified engineering technicians).

 

Secondary Education

To enter tertiary training, Sixth Form Certificate or NCEA equivalent maths, science and technology subjects are needed.

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. Civil engineering technicians also attend courses, seminars, workshops and conferences to keep their skills up to date.

 

Registration

Some employers prefer civil engineering technicians who are registered with the Engineering Associates Registration Board and/or are members of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand.

 

Useful Experience

Useful experience for civil engineering technicians includes work in the building construction industry, draughting or engineering work.
