Entry Requirements

To become a qualified electrical engineering technician you need to complete a National Diploma in Engineering (previously the New Zealand Certificate in Engineering) or an equivalent diploma or degree. You can also enter the job as an apprentice and complete unit standards on the job, while attending courses at polytechnic to gain this qualification.

Secondary Education

Sixth Form Certificate, Bursary or NCEA equivalent is needed to enter tertiary training. Useful subjects include maths, science and technology.

Training on the job

Once you graduate with an engineering qualification, you can participate in an on-the-job training programme with the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ).

 

Registration

Some employers prefer that you are registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board.

 

Useful Experience

Previous experience working in the engineering, draughting, electrical or mechanical fields is useful for electrical engineering technicians.
