Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to become an interior plasterer as you learn on the job. However, most employers prefer you to do an apprenticeship and gain a National Certificate in Interior Systems. This qualification allows you to specialise in areas such as:
  • fibre cement fixing
  • fibre cement finishing
  • fibrous plaster
  • fibrous plaster manufacture
  • plasterboard finishing.
Apprenticeships for 16 to 21-year-olds can also be achieved through the Modern Apprenticeship Scheme.

 

Secondary Education

At least three years of secondary education is recommended. Useful subjects include maths, English and workshop technology.

Training on the job

New interior plasterers gain skills on the job under the guidance of an experienced plasterer.

They may also attend seminars and training sessions about new plastering products coming onto the market, and read trade publications to keep up to date with changes.

Useful Experience

Useful experience for interior plasterers includes any work in building or construction, especially as an exterior plasterer or plasterer's assistant.
