Entry Requirements
There are no specific entry requirements to become an exterior plasterer as you learn on the job. However, most employers prefer you to do an apprenticeship and gain a National Certificate in Solid Plastering and/or a National Certificate in Proprietary Plaster Cladding Systems.
Apprenticeships for 16 to 21-year-olds can be done through the Modern Apprenticeship Scheme.
Secondary Education
At least three years of secondary education is recommended. Useful subjects include maths, English and workshop technology.

New exterior plasterers gain skills on the job under the guidance of an experienced plasterer.
They may also attend seminars and training sessions about new plastering products that are coming onto the market, and read trade publications to keep up to date with changes.
Registration
On 1 November 2008, the Department of Building and Housing introduced the first stage of the Licensed Building Practitioners Scheme for exterior plasterers. The scheme will mean that, from November 2010, certain exterior plastering work will need to be done or supervised by a licensed exterior plasterer.
To get a licence, exterior plasterers will have to prove their experience and/or have appropriate qualifications.
Useful Experience
Useful experience for exterior plasterers includes any work in building and construction, especially as an interior plasterer or plasterer's assistant.
