Entry Requirements

To become a baker you need to complete an apprenticeship and gain a National Certificate in Baking, Plant Baking or Craft Baking.

Baking apprenticeships are part of the Modern Apprenticeship scheme, which is for people aged 16 to 21.

 

Secondary Education

Most employers prefer apprentices to have completed four years of secondary school. Useful subjects include English and maths.

 

Get help with choosing school subjects

Tertiary Education

Tertiary courses in baking and patisserie are useful to become a baker. Courses in first aid and hygiene are also recommended.

 

Training on the job

Bakers can attend block and day-release courses at polytechnics.

 

Useful Experience

Work as a baker's assistant or any food handling experience is useful.
