Entry Requirements

There are no specific requirements to become a qualified clothing marker and cutter as training can be completed on the job. Trainees can work towards a National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture. Some employers prefer their clothing makers and cutters to have a tertiary qualification in fashion technology, but this depends on the type of garments made.

Clothing markers and cutters who work in the area of high fashion generally require a higher level of skill. Those who use a computerised marking system usually learn to operate a computer-aided design (CAD) system as part of a fashion technology qualification.

Secondary Education

Some employers prefer clothing markers and cutters who have two years of secondary education in technical drawing, maths and basic computing.
