Entry Requirements
There are no specific entry requirements to become a communication officer. However, some employers prefer you to have:
- communication, public relations or journalism experience
- a tertiary qualification in communications or public relations.
Secondary Education
If you want to study at a tertiary institution you will need a tertiary entrance qualification, including Bursary or NCEA Level 3 English.
Media studies is also useful.

Communication officers may attend in-house training courses on communications and media relations, conferences and seminars, and meet with other communication officers to keep up to date with new developments in the communications industry.
Useful Experience
Having some experience in an advertising or communications organisation is useful, as is experience in:
- journalism
- marketing
- customer relations
- project management
- photography
- desktop publishing.
