Entry Requirements

There are no specific requirements to become a bicycle mechanic, as skills are gained on the job.

You can also complete an apprenticeship to become a bicycle mechanic and gain a National Certificate in Retail including Bicycle Sales and Servicing.

Bicycle mechanic apprenticeships are part of the Modern Apprenticeships scheme, which is for people aged 16 to 21.

Training on the job

Bicycle mechanics can attend courses run by bicycle manufacturers to develop their skills. Bicycle mechanics can gain formal unit standards developed by the Retail Institute in consultation with the Bicycle Industry Association of New Zealand.

 

Useful Experience

Useful experience for bicycle mechanics includes:

  • part-time work at a local bicycle shop
  • practise using mechanical equipment
  • work in a retail environment
  • helping out with bicycle clubs 
  • working at regional race meets.
