Working Conditions

Roading engineers work in offices and at various worksites in all weather conditions. They often travel locally, and may be required to travel nationally and internationally.

Equipment

Equipment roading engineers may use includes:
  • computers and computer-modelling programmes
  • surveying instruments and technology
  • ground-investigation equipment
  • manuals, standards and guidelines
  • instruments in test cars
  • traffic-counting and speed-surveying equipment.

 

Hours

Roading engineers usually work regular office hours, but they may be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends.

 

Contact with people

Roading engineers may work independently and as part of a team. They spend a lot of time consulting others, including clients, other professionals, contractors, road workers, government officials and members of the public.
