Working Conditions

Hospital nurses work in hospitals, clinics, rest homes, nursing homes and community health centres.

 

Equipment

Equipment hospital nurses use includes:

  • medical equipment and instruments
  • a range of specialist machinery such as kidney dialysis machines, ventilators and IV pumps
  • drugs and anaesthetics
  • sterile gloves, masks and gowns
  • computers.

Hours

Hospital nurses often do shift work, which include nights and weekends. The length of a shift can vary from eight to 12 hours.

 

Contact with people

Hospital nurses work in teams and have a lot of contact with people from a variety of backgrounds, including patients and their families, other medical and nursing staff, and members of the public.
