Working Conditions

Health and safety officers work at a variety of workplaces and often travel between work sites that include:

  • offices
  • factories
  • construction sites
  • forests
  • wharves.

They may spend a lot of time at worksites to familiarise themselves with the different types of jobs in an organisation.

Equipment

Equipment health and safety officers may use includes:
  • safety equipment such as hard hats, steel-capped boots, breathing masks, high-visibility vests, and climbing harnesses
  • audiometry (hearing test) equipment and noise monitoring equipment
  • lung function testing equipment (spirometer)
  • first aid equipment
  • a computer.

Hours

Health and safety officers usually work regular office hours.

  • staff at all levels, including senior management
  • nurses
  • occupational therapists
  • physiotherapists
  • doctors
  • other health and safety colleagues and experts
  • other health professionals
  • equipment manufacturers
  • insurance brokers
  • Department of Labour health and safety inspectors.
