Working Conditions

Building contractors work on small and large building sites, in all weather conditions. Conditions may be muddy, noisy and dusty, and building contractors may work at heights on some building sites. They also spend time in offices.

Equipment

Equipment building contractors may use includes:
  • power and hand tools
  • precise measuring equipment
  • building materials such as timber and steel
  • machinery and vehicles
  • safety equipment, such as hard hats, steel-capped work boots, ear protection and protective wet-weather clothing
  • general office equipment, including computers.

Hours

Building contractors may work irregular or long hours, and often work weekends.

 

Contact with people

Building contractors supervise carpenters and other staff that they may employ. They also interact with clients and consult with architects and other building professionals.
