Working Conditions

Roading construction workers work on roads, highways, airport runways and driveways. They may work seated in a vehicle cabin. Conditions may be noisy, wet, cold, dirty and dusty.

Roading construction workers travel locally to various worksites and may travel to other parts of the country to work.

 

Equipment

Equipment roading construction workers may use includes:
  • road materials such as gravel, bitumen and concrete
  • a heavy vehicle such as a truck, grader or bulldozer
  • mechanical equipment such as a roller, a paving machine and a drill
  • hand tools such as a shovel

Hours

Roading construction workers usually work irregular hours. They often work early mornings and during weekends. They may also do shift work and be on call in emergencies. As the work is seasonal, roading construction workers generally work longer hours during the summer and their hours are reduced during the winter.

 

Contact with people

Roading construction workers usually work in a team and follow the instructions of a supervisor. They may also have a supervisory role. Roading construction workers also interact with the public, plumbers, drainlayers and blocklayers, engineers and management.
