Working Conditions
Waiters and waitresses work in what is known as 'front of house' or the dining areas of restaurants, hotels, clubs and other places where food and drink is served. They spend a lot of time on their feet in environments that can be noisy and stressful depending on the customers being served.
Equipment
Equipment waiters and waitresses may use includes:
- trays and trolleys
- bottle openers
- pens and paper
- cash registers
- computerised booking systems
- cleaning equipment.
Hours
Waiters and waitresses work full- or part-time hours and may work evenings and weekends.
Contact with people
Waiters and waitresses usually work as part of a team under the direction of a supervisor, maitre d'hotel or manager. They have contact with a wide range of people including:
- customers
- bar staff
- restaurant, bar, hotel or café managers
- chefs and kitchen staff.
