Working Conditions

Work conditions vary for massage therapists. This is because they often have to travel to different locations to treat patients.

They may work from home or in a natural health centre where conditions are spacious, clean and tidy.  Massage therapists who visit different businesses may have to adapt to more cluttered conditions that are not specifically set up for massage, such as in an office storeroom or boardroom.

Equipment

Equipment massage therapists may use includes:
  • massage oils and waxes
  • a massage table or chair
  • sheets, towels and pillows.

Hours

Massage therapists usually work irregular hours, and often work evenings and weekends.

Contact with people

Most massage therapists work independently and have one-on-one contact with their clients. They can work with a range of different clients including:
  • the elderly
  • children
  • patients with disabilities or illnesses
  • pregnant women.

“You have to be a giver and enjoy being of service. It’s not for someone who hasn’t got patience for people. You’ve got to love people and want to do the best you can for them.”
