Pay for dancers varies depending on the type of dance and number of performances they do.
  • Contemporary dancers are usually paid per project or performance.
  • Classical dancers are usually employed full time, and earn between $30,000 and $55,000 a year. Principal ballet dancers are paid more than those in the corps de ballet (ballet company dancers who perform as a group).
According to the 2006 Census, dancers earned an average of $25,600 a year.

Career Progression

Dancers can move into dance production, choreography or teaching dance, arts administration, or roles in the health and fitness industry.
