Pay
To become a detective you must have worked as a police officer for at least two years.
- During training to become a police officer, new recruits earn $32,619 a year, plus other benefits (total package $36,149).
- New graduates from Police College earn $47,600, plus other benefits (total package $53,305).
- Once a police officer becomes a detective, pay is dependent on rank and experience.
According to the 2006 Census, detectives earned an average of $60,600 a year and worked an average of 43 hours per week. This includes full and part-time workers.

Career Progression
During their career, detectives may move between positions in other police units and the Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB).
Detectives have a range of skills that are useful in other areas of policing, and are often promoted to management positions in the General Duties Branch (the main uniformed branch of the NZ Police).
