Hospital Nurse - Pay and progression
Tapuhi Hōhipera
Pay
Hospital nurses usually earn between $40,000 and $55,000 a year. Senior positions and penal rates for overtime and shift work may increase their pay. However, penal rates are not offered in all hospitals.
There are three levels of competency for registered nurses (hospital nurses come into this category) which are competent, proficient and expert. These levels carry a monetary incentive, and there are also additional payments available for professional development.
According to the 2006 Census, hospital nurses earned an average of $39,700 a year and worked an average of 32 hours per week. This includes full and part-time workers.
