Pay varies for diagnostic radiologists and registrars (those in training), depending on seniority and frequency of on-call or emergency cover.

  • Qualified diagnostic radiologists working for a district health board (DHB) can earn from between $128,595 and $195,441 a year. Diagnostic radiologists working for private practices and hospitals can earn more than this.
  • Registrars working for a DHB can earn between $93,472 and $153,521.

According to the 2006 Census, diagnostic radiologists earned an average of $115,300 a year and worked an average of 41 hours per week. This includes full and part-time workers.

Career Progression

Diagnostic radiologists start as registrars before becoming certified as a consultant. They can then go on to become a senior consultant with responsibility for their department, or combine their duties with research or teaching.
