Salaries for art historians vary depending on the size and type of organisation they work for.
  • Art historians at universities usually earn between $50,000 (as assistant lecturers) and $80,000 or more (as senior lecturers).
  • Curators typically earn between $40,000 and $70,000.
  • Art historians working in marketing or government policy roles can expect to earn between $50,000 and $70,000.

According to the 2006 Census, art historians earned an average of $40,300 a year and worked an average of 38 hours per week. This includes full and part-time workers.

Career Progression

Most art historians work for museums or galleries, and usually need to volunteer or undertake internships to get experience.
  • With a year's experience, they may move into curator roles at smaller museums and galleries.
  • With five or more years' experience they may move on to larger museums and galleries, or may become team leaders.
Art historians may also work as university lecturers, teachers, marketing, communications or policy advisers, or in publishing.
