Pay for bicycle mechanics varies depending on experience and the region that they work in.

  • As an apprentice you may earn between $12 and $15 an hour.
  • After two years you may earn between $15 and $17 an hour.
  • As a fully experienced mechanic you may earn between $17 and $21 an hour.

Bicycle mechanics who spend more time on the shop floor sometimes get commission from their sales. This can add up to $9,000 a year onto their pay.


According to the 2006 Census, bicycle mechanics earned an average of $23,700 a year and worked an average of 40 hours per week. This includes full and part-time workers.

After gaining considerable experience, bicycle mechanics may specialise in assisting professional racing teams.  They can also go into managing or owning their own bicycle shops.
