It's difficult to sustain a full-time career as a model in New Zealand. In 2006, there were only 120 people working as full-time models. As a result, many models also work in other areas, such as retail, hospitality or administration, to supplement their income.
| Census | Number of models |
|---|
| 1996 | 120 |
| 2001 | 183 |
| 2006 | 120 |

Although the average annual income for a model is $20,000, the hourly rates for jobs are relatively good and modelling assignments are in great demand, so competition is high.
Many models build up their reputation and experience by moving overseas to work, which opens up opportunities for new models in New Zealand.
Many industries require models for marketing and promotion. The top five employers are:
- arts-related services (26% of total)
- other business services (21% of total)
- post-school education services (9% of total)
- other education services (9% of total)
- marketing and business management services (6% of total).

Most models work in the Auckland (55%), Canterbury (13%) and Wellington (10%) regions. Most commercial work is in Auckland because this is where most film and television production companies are based.
