Harbour Pilot - Job outlook
Kaiurungi Aka
What are the chances of getting a job?
Increasing opportunities for recently qualified harbour pilots
Harbour pilots are required to have the Master of a Foreign Going Ship certificate, which is gained through a lengthy period of experience at sea. There are around 55 qualified harbour pilots employed by ports in New Zealand.
Many harbour pilots are nearing retirement age, and there is a concern that there will be a skills shortage in the near future. As a result, employment opportunities for newly qualified harbour pilots are good.
Demise of apprenticeships contributes to shortage
The reason for the age profile among harbour pilots is the lack of training opportunities in the New Zealand Merchant Navy over the last 20 years. Entry level requirements and licence structures have changed as a result of this, concern about skill shortages, and a review of maritime rules.
Industry trends, such as the increasing need to be safety-conscious and aware of environmental pressures, have also resulted in the development of standards and procedures that harbour pilots have to follow.
Turnover low
Turnover among harbour pilots is low, as they tend to stay working for the same port for many years.
