NIWA is a Crown research institute that researches the sustainable management and development of New Zealand's atmospheric, marine and freshwater systems and associated resources. 

The New Zealand Marine Sciences Society is a not-for-profit organisation that raises public awareness of the marine environment through activities, press releases and awards. It assists marine science students and young scientists through initiatives such as Student Research Grant Funds. It also provides advice to the Government on marine policy issues.
