The Cawthron Institute is a privately funded organisation. It provides research, advice and analytical services to support the development of New Zealand's seafood industry and sustainable management of the coastal and freshwater environment. 

The Department of Conservation conserves the natural and historic heritage of New Zealand. It manages national parks, conservation areas, protected waters, native wildlife, marine reserves and historic places on conservation land. 

Landcare Research - Manaaki Whenua is a Crown Research Institute for environmental research. It offers consultancy services and provides expertise in sustainable management of land resources. 

The Ministry for the Environment works to identify New Zealand's environmental problems and provide solutions. It advises the Government on New Zealand's environmental laws and policies, monitors how these are working in practice, and takes action to improve them. It also reports on how local government performs on environmental matters.
