People working with trains need to gain skills to make sure the rail yards run efficiently and safely

Entry requirements for rail transport jobs vary. For many you need to pass medical and entry tests (which may include personality and intelligence tests) then complete training on the job and in-house training with KiwiRail or another rail company.

To become a train controller you must be complete a three-month theory correspondence course. You must also pass personality and competency tests.

Progression

Experience will help you progress in rail transport jobs, and could include:
  • moving into other jobs in the industry, such as sales or administration roles
  • being appointed to health and safety positions
  • becoming a supervisor or manager.
