Training

Two tow truck operators prepare to attach a tow truck's winch to a car.

New tow truck operators usually work with an experienced person until they are able to work on their own

To work in road transport jobs you must have an appropriate class of licence or endorsement. These may include:
  • heavy vehicle licence
  • passenger endorsement
  • a hazardous or dangerous goods endorsement
  • fork-lift licence.
These require you to have driving experience and pass relevant tests. You may be able to do courses to help you gain the appropriate licence, class or endorsement. Ongoing training, such as defensive driving courses, is also available.
