Contact centre workers' pay depends on their experience, their exact role and the size and type of contact centre where they work.
- Team members usually earn between $36,000 and $45,000.
- Senior contact centre staff and team leaders may earn up to $50,000 a year.

What you will do
Contact centre workers may do some or all of the following:
- provide information, advice or appointments to people who contact an organisation
- resolve customer enquires and complaints
- forward enquiries to relevant departments
- follow up enquiries by sending information
- ring customers to promote products or services
- conduct surveys.
Other duties vary according to the organisation they work for. For example, those who work in ambulance centres may give first aid advice.
Skills and knowledge
Contact centre workers need to have:
- excellent speaking and listening skills
- excellent writing skills, as they may respond to enquiries through email, web chat, or letters
- good computer and data entry skills
- knowledge of their organisation's products or services.
Contact centre workers:
- work in contact centres or from reception desks, though some may work from home
- may work full or part-time hours, during evenings, nights and weekends,and sometimes on rotating shifts.

A surprise question
Christchurch City Council call centre worker Pete Bradley is prepared for most things – but he wasn't prepared for a call about his own pet.
"Someone rang saying, 'I’ve just had this lovely little dog turn up on my property.' And it was my dog!"
Helping people, not selling
Pete enjoys helping each caller. “If you have to take half an hour, you do. In my last job we had targets to meet, and were only allowed to be on the phone for so long. I started feeling really self-conscious about forcing products onto people. It wasn't where I wanted to be."
The night shift – in a shaking building
The job held an unpleasant surprise. After the September 2010 Christchurch earthquake, Pete had to work.
"I didn’t notice that little clause in my contract! So I was doing seven at night til seven in the morning. We’d be sitting at work and the whole thing would start shaking. And there were some pretty hairy calls."
But overall, Pete's enthusiastic about his job. "It’s just a really awesome environment, and really good people to work with."

Clinton: And Lucian will get that chance at ANZs Auckland contact centre, the largest financial call centre in the country.
Lucian: Hi I’m Lucian.
Corinne: Hi Lucien, I’m Corinne. Welcome to the ANZ Contact Centre.
Lucian: Thank you.
Corinne: So, this in the inbound contact centre, and this is where the Customer Services Consultants come and take the incoming calls.
Corinne: In inbound , we take about 10,000 calls a day, across both Auckland and Wellington sites, and those are the customers calling us on any one of our 0800 numbers.
1.09.19 Clinton: And when they call the answering consultant is their first point of contact with the bank so to ensure Lucian makes a good impression, Pamela Mansell will be showing him the ropes.
1.09.29 Corrine: Hi, this is Lucian.
1.09.30 Pam: Hi Lucian.
1.09.31 Corinne: He’s spending the day with us today and I’m going to leave him on your capable hands.
1.09.35 Lucian: So what does a Customer Services Consultant do?
1.09.37 Pam: How about I show you?
1.09.38 Lucian: Cool.
1.09.39 Pam: So this a team of Customer Service Consultants. If you’re employed by the bank you work with a group of about 10-15 people. Each Customer Services Consultant will take around 100-120 calls per day.
1.09.51 Corinne: Calls that they could be expected to field could be just customers ringing up for balances, or it could be a customer in dire need of help – assistance, their credit card has been stolen – it’s wide-ranging.
1.10.04 Clinton: Each teams aim is to answer a minimum number of calls per minute. Ensuring they do are team leaders like Pam who monitor their progress and mentor them through the more complex enquiries.
1.10.14 Pam: This here is all of our queues, and it’s also reflected on all of our boards around the building. So our aim of course is to answer all of the calls, but to also answer them within a timely manner, so our agreement is to answer 80% of calls within 30 seconds.
1.10.30 Lucian: Well there’s one sitting there, do you reckon I’d be able to take it?
1.10.33 Pam: Er, well we do usually give staff around five weeks training before they’re allowed to get on the phones, but we are about to have a training sessions now if you’d like to come along to that.
1.10.41 Lucian: Sweet, sounds good.
1.10.42 Pam: Great!
1.10.43 Pam: This is Lucian, he’s here today to learn a bit about the job and what we do here. Alright, so everyone Shay’s going to take us through a quick icebreaker.
1.10.51 Corinne: Training is really important because we don’t want our Customer Service Consultants tripping up on our customers. We want to make sure that they’re as well informed as possible so that they can take that call, and even if they don’t know it, they know where to go to get that answer.
1.11.03 Clinton: During your 5 weeks of training you’ll discover just how fast paced the job can be. A buzz for those who enjoy the high energy lifestyle. For this reason it’s important at ANZ their consultants are given the chance to relax and recharge in their purpose built rec room. And after an intensive days training it’s the perfect chance for Lucian to catch up with Ryan, who himself has recently entered the industry.
1.11.31 Lucian: So now that you’ve done all your training, what are your options from here? What are you planning on doing?
1.11.34 Ryan: I study during the week, so what they’ve done is they’ve arranged it so I can work a fulltime shift over the weekend, so then I’m free Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday to study and it makes a massive difference, so I can work fulltime and study and I’m able to pay off my studies without having to take any loans and it makes a big difference to me, you know, it’s something I really enjoy.
1.11.55 Clinton: So now that Lucian’s recharged and back on form, it’s time to see if he can talk the talk.

1.12.20 Pam: I think key skills would just be people skills, and an open mind. Just being passionate about people and about our customers. It’s the main thing here – everything else can be learnt.

1.12.39 Jesse: How did you find that?
1.12.40 Lucian: It was all pretty fast paced eh. How did you know where everything is so quickly?
1.12.44 Jesse: Well you do get training, and once you come out here you get it, you get it quite quickly. I mean in the first three months it is a bit nerve-wracking, but definitely after you’ve been here for a while, you get the hang of it quite easily.
1.12.56 Jesse: So if you’re ready we can take a call now if you like?
1.12.58 Lucian: Oh yeah, I reckon we could give it a go. Got any tips for me?
1.13.00 Jesse: Yeah definitely. I mean the first thing is to smile, because the customer can always hear when you’re smiling – it sets the tone of the call. Stay professional and polite throughout the call, and at the end of the call it’s important to ask, “Is there anything else I can help with?”
1.13.13 Lucian: Ok awesome, sweet. Let’s do it.

1.13.28 Corinne: As far as qualifications go, English is a strong one, maths, drama helps a little bit too because that tone of voice is so important. You can imagine in the calls for our customers to listen to that because you don’t have the visuals, you don’t have the smile as such.

1.14.38 Clinton: The work as a customer services consultant with ANZ New Zealand offers a Dynamic work environment, with excellent career opportunities and support. Computer skills are essential, as are excellent verbal skills, previous customer service and sales experience. The work is team-focused so being a good team player is important. There are no specific requirements for becoming a contact centre worker, although most organisations provide training in their products and services for staff before they start work.
Depending on their employer, they may then be able to work towards a:
- National Certificate in Contact Centre Operations (Level 3)
- National Certificate in Contact Centres (Levels 3 and 4)
- National Diploma in Contact Centre Management (Level 5).
Emergency services have specific training for people working in their communication centres. These workers may also need to undergo security checks and vision and hearing tests.
Some employers may prefer you to have NCEA Level 2.
Contact centre workers need to be able to:
- remain calm and patient even when under pressure
- work well as part of a team
- relate well to people of different cultures
- maintain confidentiality
- communicate well.
Those working in emergency contact centres can take difficult calls, so need to be emotionally resilient.

What are the chances of getting a job?
Demand for contact workers is growing because:
- more organisations are recruiting contact centre workers to market their products to incoming callers, rather than useing telemarketers
- some Australian firms have outsourced their contact centres to New Zealand
- there is continuing demand for workers to deal with insurance queries after the Christchurch earthquakes
- as manufacturing picks up there is a need for people to answer technical queries in "B2B' (business to business) contact centres.
Although demand is best for experienced contact centre workers, positions for those with little or no experience do become available.
Regular vacancies due to high turnover of contact centre workers
Contact centre worker jobs come up regularly as people tend to stay in the job for only a short time because:
- these jobs are usually entry-level positions, and contact centre workers often progress to other roles in the organisation
- pay is low.

Progression and specialisations
Experienced contact centre workers can progress into team leader roles. They can also work towards a National Certificate in Contact Centres – Team Leader (Level 4).
They may then progress into management, or other roles in their organisation.
