Employment statistics

According to Stats NZ, as of 6 May 2020 there are:

  • 2,661,000 employed
  • 116,000 unemployed.

Statistics on changes to the labour market

According to Stats NZ filled jobs for all industries are down by 1.7% (37,508 jobs).

These major industries have seen drops in filled jobs:

  • primary industries – down 4.3% (4,480 jobs)
  • goods-producing industries – down 1.0% (4,153 jobs)
  • services industries – down 1.7% (29,317 jobs).

Regions with the biggest fall in filled jobs

Stats NZ reports these regions saw the biggest drop in filled jobs:

  • Auckland – down 11,199 jobs (1.5%)
  • Canterbury – down 4,925 jobs (1.7%)
  • Gisborne – down 1,168 jobs (5.4%)
  • Southland – down 2,010 jobs (4.2%)
  • Tasman – down 831 jobs (3.5%)
  • Waikato – down 4,421 jobs (2.2%).

Top industries for employment

Stats NZ reported the three largest employers in October 2019 were:

  •  manufacturing with 250,700 employees (but dropping)
  •  health care and social assistance with 246,500 employees
  •  retail trade with 219,400 employees.
