Entry requirements

Domestic and international students must have completed:

NZQF level 5, or
a 3-year Diploma, or
a Degree,

in a field related to the applicant's chosen major for the Advanced Management, International Marketing, and Hospitality Management majors; in an engineering discipline for the Engineering Management major; or in a healthcare-related discipline for the Healthcare Management major.

In lieu of a formal qualification, applicants may apply if they have at least three years suitable work experience. Under this criteria it is expected the work experience be directly related to the field the applicant wishes to major. The suitability of the applicant will be assessed and decided by the NZIE Academic Board.

Applicants for whom English is not their first language are required to have an IELTS academic score of 6.0 with no band score lower than 5.5, or TOEFL (pBT) score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE), or TOEFL (iBT) score of 60 (with writing score of 18), or Cambridge English Examinations FCE, or FCE for schools, or CAE, or CPE with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill, or NZCEL Level 4, with the academic endorsement, or Pearson Test of English (Academic) with an Academic score of 50, or City & Guilds IESOL, B2 communicator or with a score of 66. Results must come from one test conducted in the last 2 years.

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The aim of the Diploma in Applied Business is to provide students with the knowledge, understanding, and skills to effectively implement and apply advanced analytical tools to business, marketing, hospitality, engineering, or healthcare issues in a dynamic global environment. The qualification also aims to develop significant 'real life' business context experience in relation to the major studied through the extensive work based internship learning experience. Students may select one of the following four major options to study: Advanced Management, International Marketing, Hospitality Management or Engineering Management.

The International Marketing major aims specifically to facilitate students' understandings and experience of the design and implementation of marketing strategies in emerging international markets and in a wide range of businesses and organisations. Students targeted for entry to this option will hold a minimum of a relevant diploma in marketing or a related field at NZQF Level 5 and will be seeking to develop more advanced and applied capabilities in the business subfield of International Marketing.

The Advanced Management major option aims to facilitate students' understandings and ability to effectively apply Business Process Management knowledge and skills in a wide range of organisational environments. Students targeted for entry to this option will hold a minimum of a relevant diploma in business or a related field at NZQF Level 5 and will be seeking to develop more advanced and applied business management capabilities and experience.

The Hospitality Management major option aims to facilitate students' understandings and ability to effectively apply Hospitality Management knowledge and skills in a Hospitality environment. Students targeted for entry to this option will hold a minimum of a relevant diploma in hospitality or a related field at NZQF Level 5 and will be seeking to develop more
advanced and applied hospitality management capabilities and experience.

The Engineering Management major option aims to facilitate students' understandings and ability to effectively apply Management and Project Management skills in an Engineering environment. Students targeted for entry to this option will hold a minimum of a diploma in an engineering discipline at NZQF Level 5 and will be seeking to develop more advanced
and applied management and engineering project management capabilities and experience.

The Healthcare Management major option aims to facilitate students' understandings and ability to effectively apply Healthcare Management skills in a New Zealand healthcare environment. Students targeted for entry to this option will hold a minimum of a diploma in a health-related discipline at NZQF Level 5 and will be seeking to develop more advanced and applied management and healthcare management capabilities and experience.
