What does the scholarship get me?

Purpose of award

To provide bursaries to students undertaking full-time study towards a Business or Sciences diploma or degree at Massey University, and who would otherwise be unable to study due to financial hardship.

Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.

4.Applicants must be intending to enrol for full-time study towards a diploma or degree in either the College of Business, the College of Sciences (Bachelor of AgriScience, Bachelor of AgriCommerce, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Information Science, Bachelor of Technology only), Architecture or Engineering or College of Health ( Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, Bachelor of Health Science, Bachelor of Human Nutrition). Applicants studying at Masters or PhD level are not eligible to apply. Where possible, at least one bursary each year will be awarded to applicants intending to study horticulture.

Selection criteria

The bursaries shall have a value to meet the needs of the student to attend university, covering all or part of fees and textbooks, and is tenable at any Massey University campus. The value of the Bursary is up to $10,000 however, usually recipients are awarded between $1,000 - $3,000. The Bursary is granted for one year, but may be extended so long as the recipient achieves satisfactory results and still qualifies under the financial hardship criteria. Recipients must re-apply.

 

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

Once established in their careers and in a position to do so, some recipients may feel inclined to repay the bursary monies and/or make donations to the fund with a view to more students being able to benefit from the endowment in the future, There will be, however, no requirement to do so.

How and when do students learn of the decision?

Each bursary will be paid in two equal instalments in April and August.

Decision makers

The bursaries shall be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Selection, Massey University.

A Selection Committee consisting of the Vice-Chancellor or nominee, the Chairperson of the Scholarships Committee, and one other academic staff member shall make a recommendation for the award of the bursaries, with final approval from a Trustee of the David Levene Charitable Trust.

Additional information

An open fund has been created to allow members of the public and other benefactors to contribute to the Foundation, thus enabling it to help additional students. The bursaries shall have a value to meet the needs of the student to attend university, covering all or part of fees and textbooks, and is tenable at any Massey University campus. In the future, this Foundation Fund may be merged with further endowments from the Donor, for purposes associated with the University. Once established in their careers and in a position to do so, some recipients may feel inclined to repay the bursary monies and/or make donations to the fund with a view to more students being able to benefit from the endowment in the future. There will be, however, no requirement to do so.
