Founded for the encouragement of the study of Chemistry and Physics.

Selection criteria

The Scholarship is tenable by students who were born in New Zealand, and who are under 19 years of age at thetime of application.
To take up and be paid the Scholarship, students must be enrolled and have paid the fees, or arranged to pay the fees, for enrolment in the first year of full-time study in a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science conjoint programme or a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) or Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) conjoint programme in a major or specialistion administered by the School of Chemical Sciences or the Department of Physics.

Decision makers

The Scholarship will be awarded by the University of Auckland Council on the recommendation of a Selection Committee consisting of the Associate Dean (Academic) of the Faculty of Science (or nominee), the Head of the School of Chemical Sciences (or nominee) and the Head of the Department of Phyics (or nominee).

History or background of award

Mr. Thomas B. Gillies, a judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, presented to the Council in the year of 1884, the sum of £3,000 for the purpose of founding two science Scholarships, one to be called the Gillies Scholarship in memory of the late Mrs. Gillies, the other to be called the Sinclair Scholarship, to assist students experiencing financial hardship. Conditions for the Scholarship were established by Deed of Trust in 1889.
