What does the scholarship get me?
The value of this award is $10,000, which can be spread over three years depending on your study plans.
Closing dates for applications
Next: 1 October 2023
Applications open on 1 July and close on 1 October.
Length of award
Note, no more than $5,000 will be allocated in any one year.
Number of awards offered
Up to three scholarships may be awarded of which one will be dedicated to a Maori/Pacifica candidate.
Purpose of award
Open to female second year tertiary students and above (including Honours and Masters students) intending to take a full-time course of study in science, technology, computer engineering, mathematics, data science and cyber security at any New Zealand tertiary institution.
Selection criteria
To be eligible for the GCSB Tertiary Scholarship, applicants must be:
Female students over the age of 18 years
In your second, or subsequent year of full time tertiary study (including Honours and Masters students)
Have enrolled, or been accepted into a full time degree majoring in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) at an approved NZQA accredited tertiary provider in New Zealand for the next academic year. Note: the STEM disciplines we are interested in include computer science, cyber security, technology, mathematics, computer engineering, and data science.
A New Zealand citizen or permanent resident

How will applications be assessed?
Proven leadership qualities and/or experience
Voluntary work (including coaching and mentoring)
Demonstrated commitment to pursuing a STEM career
Clear understanding of the importance of STEM for New Zealand
Academic achievement and excellence

Please complete the application form and send a copy of this with your academic transcript to scholarship@nzic.govt.nz.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
A short phone interview with each of the top 10 applicants will then be conducted by a representative from People and Capability, to identify the top 5 candidates.
The top 5 candidates will then be invited to meet with a panel. The panel will include the Director-General of GCSB, a representative/s from our WIT staff network, and a representative/s from the relevant areas of GCSB.
Successful scholarship winner/s will be notified in November.
Decision makers
Applications will be reviewed by a representative from People and Capability, a representative/s from our Women in Tech (WIT) staff network, and representatives from the relevant areas of GCSB, to identify our top 10 applicants.
