Length of award

Two scholarships are available annually in the form of a one-off grant of $750.As part of the scholarship entitlement the recipients may be offered up to 10 weeks paid work experience, at the Council, during the summer holidays for each year of their study (up to three years). This offer is dependent on the skills and interests of the scholarship recipient and the availability of suitable work at the Council.

Purpose of award

The scholarships and have been set up for young people from the Gore District who may be commencing study in a Council relevant area, with the opportunity for paid work experience with the Council during holiday breaks. The scholarships will be available to young people who can prove they are dedicated to studying, with a clear vision of the goals they want to achieve, and a passion for making a difference.

Selection criteria

Applicants must be: school leavers aged 19 years or younger, on 31 December 2016, from within the Gore District, who are going on to study at a tertiary level, at a New Zealand University, or an education provider that is recognised by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA);able to demonstrate their talent, dedication and passion for reaching their goals; and aiming to make a positive difference within the Gore community through their field of study or training.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

Recipients will only be eligible to be formally offered the scholarship if enrolled at a tertiary institution in the year of tenure and in compliance with any other specific requirements of the scholarship.
Scholarship holders must submit a certified copy of their previous year's record of tertiary learning prior to payment of future year's grants being made.

How and when do students learn of the decision?

Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process which will be held 15 November 2013. Students will learn of the decision the week following any interviews that may take place.

Decision makers

Successful applicants will be decided by a selection panel consisting of the Gore District Council Human Resources Manager, Community Development Officer and a Councillor.

History or background of award

The scholarships are an initiative of the Gore District Youth Council.

Additional information

Children of current Council staff members and elected members are ineligible to apply.
